Adrian Macho

Adrian Macho is an illustrator, graphics designer, and enthusiastic traveler from 'bear village', Slovakia. Adrian Macho's work is fun, creative and quirky, the use of colour works really well making his work vibrant. It has a cartoon feel to it that would fit with my theme as my magazine is aimed towards families as well as travellers. Its has also inspired me to design some bags for the magazine fashion section. From the photos and drawing I make of people I see around by the sea, I could use his style of work to create illustrations of people with interesting characters.

Presentation Ideas

Layout

To display my items that I create for the magazine, I think that carrying on the theme/pattern onto the surface would be an effective way of making art within the photograph itself. Such as this example of displaying a product.

Research

Journal

For my first ever project I had to create a map of a journey that I had taken around plymouth, I think that doing this on a smaller scale would help me navigate around where I have been already, and help me record things better and discover new things. It would lay out what I have done, were I have been and where I need to go or would like to visit for my project.

Research

This image gave me some inspiration for my art journal, living by the sea the houses range in variety from size and shape also more brightly coloured. I think that drawing my surroundings when I visit Looe and other coastal areas would make some lovely illustrations, which I could also potentially include in my magazine layout underneath the text of the booklet.

Research

I found these notebook designs from Pinterest, I love the colour scheme and the sea creatures included in the illustrations. The artist has used bold lines that makes the image stand out without any fill colour, I think that a design similar to this would work for my apron design as it instant too detailed but still bold. I like that the pattern doesn't completely cover the whole space, the blank space works really well in contrast with the bright colour of the pattern at the bottom and makes it less intense.

Research

I found these images from Pinterest I think I could design something similar for the fashion section of my blog, such as design a print for a kitchen apron that would be sea themed also design jewlery inspired by the sea.

Artist Research

Here is a couple of examples that I found from Pinterest, I think developing a journal like this will help me interpret my thoughts feelings and surroundings fro this project. This may also spark illustration ideas that I could potentially include in my final piece.

Proposal A Day In The Life Of

Over the next 14 weeks I will be discovering and exploring the culture of living by the sea. From spending a day in Looe and filming my experience there, I have been inspired to explore its themes and develop a magazine style booklet. It will include interviews from locals, recipes inspired by what I see there, and gift shop items I will create based on what I discover looking around the local shops in the town.
I plan to explore and develop my photography skills, interact with people, record my findings and turn them into something creative, imaginative, engaging, and informative, that people can look through and discover new things themselves. I want this booklet to be aimed towards people who love to travel, young proffessionals who are interested in finding out about different ways of living. This booklet can also be something you keep and use in the future for instance it will include a cooking section full of recipes to try.

A Day In The Life Of

This project is all about us, it is a personal project and we can choose the content of the project depending on our own interests. This will give me a chance to develop as an artist on a personal level, discovering my own style, and where I want to go with my work and ideas.
At the start of the project we where asked to record a day in your life outside of college, we could record this any way we liked, such as an art piece, a film or a journal. I chose to make film of my day, and from that  day we had to write our own proposal for the project from what inspired and interested us. Here is my video.

Evaluation

I found that this project allowed me to think outside of the box. It was interesting to find out about different companies and organizations that are fighting for an Eco friendly and green environment such as Regen south west.

The process of my idea was more lengthy than previous projects, it involved a lot of development. Experimentation key in this project, the more I tried new things, the more ideas I gained. I put a lot of effort into developing my final piece and had lots of different ideas, but I also didn't want to make it over complicated. I have learned from previous projects that making making something too complicated can make your audience loose the concept and purpose, the message and purpose of your work. Sometimes it can go off track from what the client asked for.

I thought that planning out my project in detail meant that there was less problems and complications when it came to making the sculpture. It was harder than expected to create the smoke for the final picture, and I had to learn how to use lighting correctly. I am used to landscape photography, so photographing my sculpture took a lot of experimentation, as I had to position the camera at the right angle. This allowed me to get the full height of the sculpture in shot. By positioning the camera at a lower angle also made the sculpture look taller, towering over the thongs below.

If I had more time to develop this project further I would experiment with diorama. I think by adding miniature people to the photograph would have created an even stronger impact on my audience.

Final Piece

Here is my final piece. I added a statement to my poster to tell the audience in one sentence to tell the audience the main aim of Regen south west, and to make the poster thought provoking. Overall this sculpture process took me two days.

Green Washing

Green washing is where companies and organisations spend more money on claiming to be environmental friendly by advertising themselves creating posters etc, than actually investing their into creating an Eco friendly environment. This can give false impressions to the audience and make the company look good.

Here are a few tips on what to look for so you don’t get greenwashed, or if you’re a company, so you’re not greenwashing yourselves:
  1. The Truth: If you see a green ad, take a look at the company as a whole. Can you easily find more information about their sustainable business practices on their website? Do they have a comprehensive environmental story? Is there believable information to substantiate the green claims you saw in the ad? If not, buyer beware.
  2. The Whole Truth: Next, try this. Google the company name plus the word “environment” and see what pops up. This is far from scientific, but if consumers or environmental advocates have a beef with the company’s track record, something’s bound to pop up.
  3. And Nothing But the Truth: “I know it when I see it.” Those are the words of Supreme Court Justice Warren Potter in a ruling on hard-core pornography in 1964. As weird as it may seem, those are words to live by for the consumer and green marketing claims. If you spot a green ad, how does it strike your gut? Does it ring true and authentic, or is it obviously hype? Smart shoppers abound globally, and your own scrutiny of green marketing claims is one more item to throw into your shopping cart.

Here are examples of Green washing that I found from the internet from quite well known companies.

Development

Here are Photo's of the process of making the sculpture, it was very hard to get it to stand up. Getting the correct shape for the windmill was the hardest part about the process. After building the main body of the sculpture I felt that all the different colours of the cars where too distracting, they took away the focus of the structure and you couldn't see it as a whole. So I decided to paint the cars a rusty colour.

Equipment

After drawing up my plan for the sculpture I went out to collect all the equipment I needed.

Paints: Brown, Yellow, Black
Wire
Lightbulbs
Screws
Old toy cars
Coal
Camera
Lighting

Visual

After doing my artist research I drew another visual, I tried to combine both of the artists styles with my own ideas. I wanted to make my idea more simplistic to have a greater impact on my audience rather than creating something where the concept has been lost. I drew out a wind turbine and then thought of how I could show fossil fuels and display how we can turn them into something more positive and beneficial for the world, I will show this through using old car junk and screws and create a wind turbine model out of it, I will also have coal and oil at the bottom of the sculpture. I will use photography to display my sculpture to my audience.

Artist Research

I decided to do some further artist research and found this artists work on Pinterest. The artist was unknown but I thought that I would still talk about their work as it inspired me with new ideas for my project. I like the simplicity of the sculpture, it looks very delicate and using just thin wire and no solids surprisingly the sculpture still has a 3D effect because of the layers that the artist has created. If I was to compare this work with Andy Goldsworthy's work I would say they have quite a lot in common. They are both delicate, they are both simplistic which  takes them both powerful to the viewer as the work is clear and bold. Andy Goldsworthy only uses natural resources which makes you appreciate the time taken to create his art. Whereas this artist uses wire to create intricate designs which can also take time to bend the wire and create.

Visual

Here I have drawn another visual inspired by Andy Goldsworthy I planned to use natural materials in my project such as leaves and plants. I came up with the idea of creating a sculpture from things that harm the environment such as cars and fossil fuels, or materials that are part of the natural environment that would be affected by this. Although I like this idea more than my photography road sign idea I think that it is too complicated and not eye catching. Whatever I produce needs to be thought provoking, and I think it would take to long for people to see the main purpose of the sculpture which is renewable energy.

Visual

Here I have created a visual based on my thumbnail sketches. I thought of making a sculpture of a world and having half of the world red hot showing fossil fuels and the high carbon economy, and on the right hand side I thought of having the world in its natural colour showing what renewable energy can do for the world. Also showing the positive effects of the Eco economy with wind turbines at the side cooling the earth down.

Signs

After creating visuals and thumbnails I decided to go and do some photography based on my plan. I went out to take pictures of any signs that I see that I could possibly use. I think having the trees in the background fits with the theme of an ECO friendly economy.

Ideas

I found this picture from Pinterest, it is about being ECO friendly. I think that this is similar to what I was trying to create with my visuals. From looking at this I think photography would be the best way to create my sign saying global warming, then it can be edited on Photoshop.

Visuals

Here I have drawn visuals based on the thumbnail drawings, I also added text to the drawing. I think that this would be best achieved through photography.

Thumbnails

Here I have drawn some thumbnails of my initial ideas following my research. I wanted to create something similar to the sign poster I made on global warming, so I experimented with different signs and warning statements. Although I am starting to develop this idea, I am not completely confident it will be my final piece, I am still experimenting with a range of media to see what works the best. such as photography sculpture and animation.

Artist Research

This sculpture was made by artist Rob Mulholland, he creates illusions with his artwork. Here is an example of his work displayed at the David Marshall lodge in Scotland. It shows people who once occuppied the land World War One broke out, it also shows the journey of them being relocated and forests where planted at the time to generate timber. This explores mans impact on nature and shows a journey of natures recovery after the war. This has inspired me to use the natural environment to photograph my artwork, as it would display the innocence of the nature around us.

Diorama Experimentation

Here is another example of a diorama that I created with my group, we tried to make it look as if the minature figure was digging the grass with the reflection of the water in the background. This didn't work as well as planned because the camera angle was wrong, and it would have been better from a lower angle so the figure is more visable.

Bristol Diorama's

Workman digging up chewing gum.

Workmen building on the road.

Workman cutting the grass.

When we where In Bristol we experimented with diorama by putting miniature figures in different places, It was much easier doing it for a second time as before I was just learning where the best places are to place the miniature figures. As I had previously done a diorama workshop I had a stronger idea of what worked and what didn't work so well, also where to angle the camera.

Andy Goldsworthy

Here is another example of Andy Goldworthy's art. This art piece reminds me of a silent protest and could be used to make a statement about fossil fuels.

Andy Goldsworthy

Here is another example of Andy Goldsworthy's work, I think that his work is bold, and the lines in his work here are strong. I could use this to create typography, I think it would be an effective way of making a statement about renewable energy.

Andy Goldsworthy

Andy Goldsworthy is a sculpture artist who uses things from the natural environment. He only uses things natural things to create his work and stitch things together such as thorns and twigs. When the sculpture is finished the only evidence of it is the photographs of the artwork which he uses to create books. I would like to use this technique to display renewable energy.

Here I have created a Typography picture in the style of Andy Goldsworthy, I made this picture a few weeks ago and though that it fitted quite well with this project and his work. I used leaves and plants that I collected from my walk. I am inspired to create more work like this as  really enjoyed it. I think his work is unique and has a powerful impact on the viewer, purely because Andy Goldsworthy's work is made completely of natural resources.

Bristol Trip

We went to bristol for the day to look the John Akomfrah exhibition and some of Banksy's art work. The exhibition by John Akomfrah was called the Vertigo sea, it is a series of films that address important issues and themes. Some of these themes included slavery and animal cruelty.
I recorded how I felt about the films as I watched them by asking myself questions that would help me to critique his work, then I read the information leaflets about what the exhibition was about so I could understand it in more depth. The Vertigo sea video was strange, it was dramatic and the picture was crisp and very vibrant in colour. The sound had a strong impact on the vibe of the room, it created its own atmosphere. The films distorted views of things that you see in the world such as fish rotting on the ground and whales being hunted instead of swimming in the ocean. It showed the relationship between man and animals and how man dominates over animals, it also showed the negative effects this can have such as greed, money and power. The film was shown on three different screens, each one related to another. I felt that John Akomfrah wanted his viewers to connect personaly with his exhibition, and each person would see a different thing to someone else. This meant that each person would interpret his work differently and I would mean something different to them on a personal level depending on what screens they where looking at at a certain time. I also felt that this made his work gripping as your eyes where constantly drawn to something different every second.

Typography Workshop

I took part in a typography workshop, the task was to find as many letters as you could in the area such as the college and the natural environment. These letters could be made with people, objects or any signs that we see. I found that this made me view my surroundings differently, and It was an interesting task. From looking at examples of artists work such as David Carson it seemed like a simple task, however it turned out to be a challenging task and it was even harder to create words out of the letters that I found. Here are the letters I managed to find.

Here are some of my results from Light Painting workshop.

It was harder than expected to create the letter or shape that I planned to do. Sometimes the movements where too fast for the camera and the picture came out as one big white light instead of lines. I tried to keep my movement short and sharp to get create the most clear picture, I found that the circle worked the best. I also tried to create depth to the picture by moving in and out with the light in the top picture.
